If your baseball bat hasn’t been performing as well lately, it may be time to declare time of death. Since baseball bats aren’t designed to last forever, it’s up to you to know the signs for when it’s time for replacement.
Dents or Cracks
Over time, it’s normal for the paint on the barrel of your baseball bat to flake and fall off. This is an aesthetic issue that doesn’t affect the performance of your bat. What you’ll need to look out for are dents in aluminum bats and cracks in composite bats.
Keep in mind that not all cracks in composite baseball bats are a bad thing. For example, spider web cracking is a sign that your composite baseball bat is fully broken in and performing at its best. You want the fibers in your composite bat to break down enough that baseballs easily bounce off, but not enough that the bat cracks.
When aluminum bats fail, you will start to notice dents along the surface. You may need to run your hand along the barrel to feel for small dents, which is a sign the bat is starting to die.
Sound Fades Away
When you first start using your baseball bat, you’ll want to pay attention to the way it sounds when it makes contact with the ball. If you have an aluminum baseball bat, you should hear a high-pitched ping. Composite bats, on the other hand, make a cracking sound when they strike a baseball. Become familiar with how your baseball bat sounds during peak performance so you’ll be able to tell when the sound fades. A quieter baseball bat means it’s time to find a replacement.
Handle is Pushed Up into the Barrel (For Composite Bats)
Since most composite bats are made up of two pieces—the handle and the barrel—you’ll need to make sure that the connector piece is working as it should. While it’s rare, there have been cases of the handle creeping into the barrel when the connector piece fails. If this is the case, you’ll want to replace your composite bat as soon as possible.
Loss of “Trampoline” Effect
When a composite baseball bat is properly broken in, it should have a “trampoline” effect. This means that the fibers in the bat are broken down enough that baseballs bounce off with ease after impact. If you notice a decline in how much the ball bounces off the bat, you may be dealing with a dead baseball bat. Keep in mind that while composite bats have to be broken in for maximum pop, aluminum bats are ready to go out of the wrapper.

The Helmet we purchased is lighter and more comfortable than the Ion 4d he used for last two seasons and it looks awesome. He is a senior defensive end and hits hard. With this helmet he says he doesn't feel the hits like he did before. I couldn't be more impressed with Safety First Sports with the customer service and super fast shipping.
